Sylvie Fleury Artwork

‘Soleil Exotica’ (2018) is from Sylvie Fleury’s series of paintings which recall the instantly recognizable shapes of makeup sets produced by high-end brands like Tom Ford or Chanel. Bearing the enticing and seductive titles of the products they are referring to, these works at the same time reference the artist’s paint palette.

Painstakingly created out of shaped canvases that are pieced together with minute craftsmanship, the works explore the fetish-laden connotations inherent to consumer items— applying to both makeup sets as well as paintings. What at first glance seems like an affirmation of our consumer society turns out to be a much more critical stance upon closer inspection. As often in Fleury’s work, she inextricably fuses high art and popular culture. By delving into the tradition of the readymade and borrowing elements from Pop art and Minimalism, Fleury explores the gender codes of contemporary consumerism and questions the structures of power and desire.
