‘Waiting for your voice,’ 2018
Sarah Lai’s work depicts mundane objects, scenes from daily life and captured memories. She often creates a dreamlike, sensuous ambiance, using pale hues that appear faded by time. Her practice is linked to popular culture in East Asia by taking inspiration from film, TV and advertisements from the 1980s and ’90s.
‘Waiting for your voice’ (2018) from the project ‘Kyuusekkin! (Love SOS)’ juxtaposes an image from an iconic 1980s-era Japanese manga series, “Maison Ikkoku,” with the artist’s painting of a woman who appears costumed for the scene. The cartoon broadcast in Hong Kong represents a collective memory shared by a generation.
