Song Dong Artwork

Song Dong is one of the most highly regarded conceptual artists from China. His wide-ranging practice includes performance, installation, sculpture, video, painting, and calligraphy. Attempting to reflect life’s experiences and memories, Song often creates artworks using ephemeral materials or found objects such as water, food, windows, and mirrors.

The title of the series to which this work belongs—'Usefulness of Uselessness’—refers to the notion of surplus value that Song has been exploring since 2014. The artist discovered the artistic value of the discarded windows salvaged from houses in Beijing, integrating them into his work to allude to the destruction of the old hutongs in the wake of urban development. Upon closer examination, the black mirrored glass panels that are set within the window frames reveal faint tints of red, green, and blue, as if they were portals to different realms. ‘Usefulness of Uselessness—Black Window No. 03’ (2021) was created amid the social distancing and lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic, when people were isolated in their homes and often the only contact with the outside world was through their windows.
