Danh Vo’s practice sheds light on the relationship between the inseparable elements that shape our sense of self, both through collective history and private experience. He often uses readymades and other artifacts, objects charged with symbolism that retain the desires and emotions of individuals and entire cultures, examining how meaning changes with context.

'Pantoffel’ (2020) created for 9 Penang Road, the ۶Ƶ Singapore premises, explores personal relationships. The title, which translates to “slipper,” appropriates a passage from ‘Cinderella,’ the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Vo’s family fled Vietnam and settled in Denmark when he was a child. The artist identifies with the unfortunate stepsisters, who in the German version of the story are willing to make sacrifices, cutting off parts of their feet to fit into the slippers, to achieve a sense of belonging and a better life. The text was reproduced by hand by his father, Phung Vo.
