Many household products like plastics, car parts, and synthetic clothing rely on fossil fuels for their production, contributing to global warming, waste and pollution. But replace fossil fuels with renewable alternatives, such as fuels derived from biomass, and those negative impacts fall significantly.

  • Through their pioneering work developing innovative solutions to cultivate and produce sustainable seaweed, Sea6 Energy, founded in 2010 and headquartered in Bangalore, are pioneering just such a solution.
  • Their biorefinery platforms convert the biomass into products for regenerative agriculture, food production, biomaterials, and energy. In 2024 they launched the first large-scale mechanized tropical seaweed farm in Indonesia, raising about USD 32mn in equity capital.
  • Today, the company generates nearly USD 10mn annually from their plant bio stimulant products, which sell in over 35 countries.
Seaweed biomass is the only biofeedstock which can scale to challenge fossil based hydrocarbons. Sea6 is all about producing this feedstock at scale, and building a new downstream bioeconomy in agriculture, food, biomaterials biostimulants and chemicals.

  • Over the past eight years, Sea6 Energy's commercial products have paved the way for large-scale production, improving soil health and increasing crop yields across nearly 15 million acres of agricultural land globally.
  • Their bioplastics could replace some 75-100,000 tons of polyethylene and 1 million tons of coated paperboard, reducing landfill waste and ocean pollution. Together with Hindustan Petroleum they are developing an industrial-scale process to convert seaweed feedstock into sustainable aviation fuel, potentially displacing the use of fossil fuel jet fuel.
  • Nelson Vadassery is the Co-Founder and CEO of Sea6 Energy. With over a decade of expertise in the industry, Nelson's vision to transform tropical seaweed farming into a scalable and efficient industry earned him a special mention in Forbes India's "30 Under 30" list in 2018.
