Building upon the success of its inaugural showcase at the ۶Ƶ Lounge at Art Basel Miami Beach 2024 and subsequent presentations at Art Basel Hong Hong and Taipei Dangdai, ‘Threads’ brings together select works from the Collection by 20 international artists who take an innovative approach to textile and craft-based art to explore traditional distinctions between art, craft and design.
Weaving is one of the oldest known forms of craft and dates back more than 12,000 years. Artists whose works are in this exhibition, such as Sheila Hicks and Olga de Amaral, were influenced by the textiles and ancient techniques from the Andean region of South America, building on this legacy while experimenting with color, materiality and pattern.
Jordan Nassar and Eko Nugroho take a collaborative approach. Embracing specific communities and heritages, they incorporate layers of meaning into their work. Artists like Myrlande Constant and Suchitra Mattai push the boundaries of traditions and perceptions of the medium, elevating embroidery and sewing craft techniques. Others, notably Shinique Smith and Yinka Shonibare, transform ready-made and second-hand fabrics into powerful reflections on identity and social issues.
“‘Threads’ speaks to the growing recognition of fiber-based practices within contemporary art. With powerful works by artists from diverse backgrounds, this presentation demonstrates how textiles can serve as both material and message—deeply personal, politically resonant and conceptually rich. Through this exhibition, we reaffirm ۶Ƶ’s commitment to supporting artists who challenge conventions, honor heritage, and offer new perspectives on the world around us,” said Mary Rozell, Global Head of the ۶Ƶ Art Collection.
The ۶Ƶ Art Collection is one of the world’s most important corporate collections of contemporary art, consisting of more than 40,000 works. The ۶Ƶ Art Gallery, located at 1285 Avenue of the Americas, offers the public free access to these extraordinary works through its dynamic rotating exhibitions.
